The cringeworthy moments everyone experiences when using a dating app
Dating apps like Tinder, Grindr and Bumble have become as commonplace in the romantic experience as standing awkwardly around the bar was for dating hopefuls of ages past (well, maybe not so past).
But with a wealth of potential soul mates at your fingertips, it makes sense you’re probably going to run into a few awkward moments along the way. Thankfully, we’ve put together this handy-dandy guide to the four cringeworthy moments that every dating app user has experienced, so you can have the comfort of knowing that your fellow daters have definitely been there.
When you accidentally swipe right instead of left and are too embarrassed to respond to their messages
It happens to the best of us, we get so drunk on the possibility of finding our true love (or the next friend with benefits) that we start to swipe right to anyone that looks like they could stand a chance. Then the worst happens: you swipe right on someone you really should’ve swiped left on. You gasp and throw your phone to the edge of the bed as you look accusingly at your thumbs; how dare they betray you like this.
The embarrassment comes flooding in, how could it possibly get any worse? Oh hello, that’s your phone dinging, that random stranger wants to chat and they’re being persistent. Now you’ve got two options: ignore the incident completely and go on with your life, or take a chance on a stranger and see where it leads. Who knows, guys, it might be fate.
When you message a stranger purely because they have a cute cat/dog/other fur baby in their profile picture
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a lady or gentleman with an adorable animal in their profile picture is far more likely to gain positive attention than the poor soul without one. You might have literally nothing else in common, but relationships have been formed and lasted on much stranger things than a mutual love for the fluffy side of the animal kingdom.
Plus, awkward AF daters rejoice, pets make a great ice breaker when you can’t think of a way to start the conversation. Even if the relationship doesn’t work out in the long run, at least you know you’ll have access to some sick patting opportunities while it lasts.
When you forget to lock your phone and your roommates decide to sort out your love life once and for all
Ah, roommates, they are either the worst or the best things to ever happen to you, but sometimes even the nicest of roomies can do the wrong thing with the right intentions – especially when it comes to dating. Remember that time you left your phone unlocked in the living room while you had a shower and when you came back you had messages from a bunch of strangers you didn’t remember swiping right too? Yeah, that was your roomie and they will so do it again if you give them the chance. They just want you to be happy, even if that means taking your love life into their own, obviously-expert, hands. Ugh, I think I just died a little inside too friends.
The first time someone sends you unsolicited nudes
It’s inevitable that at some time on your humble journey through the world of dating apps, you’re probably going to get to intimately know a random stranger’s body without meaning to. Unsolicited dick picks, bathroom boob shoots and even the ol’ booty flex photo will somehow end up on your phone. Just make sure you have an ample supply of cute puppy pictures or doughnut shots on hand to serve as suitable brain-bleach and remember to block the offending party in any way you can.
Oh, and to those of you sending unsolicited nudes: stop it. Put your phone down and walk away or risk losing your internet privileges. Just trust me on this one.
