Nine things only students get excited about

University can be a stressful experience. You’ll have four assignments due in the same week and yet you’re still somehow expected to find the time to sleep for eight hours every night and act like a fully-functioning adult. Even though uni can be a strenuous journey, here are some awesome things that you never used to get excited about before you were a student.

Free food

One time I only went to a uni party because they said they would have free pizza, and you can bet I wasn’t the only student there who came just for the food. I even rode my bike to uni because they had an event where if you bike to uni you get free breakfast. And anyone who knows me can acknowledge that I HATE exercise with every fibre of my being. To a student, free food is the best thing you could possibly bribe us with. And we deserve free food god dammit.

Student discounts

Ahh, student discounts. The very word makes me feel warm and fuzzy. From gym memberships to clothes to the much needed coffee, discounts can make this cruel education thing seem worthwhile.

When there aren’t any required books for a course

You mean I don’t have to spend $300 on a textbook I’ll only use once? And it’s even better if there are no weekly readings before every class. Like I wasn’t going to do them anyway, but at least now I don’t have to feel guilty about it!

Having awesome group members

You’ll know that feeling of joy when you realise your group members are actually competent and know what they’re talking about. Now all they have to do is stay efficient until the end of the project.

Or better yet, when the professor says you can work alone! You know you’ll probs end up doing all the work in a group project anyway so why burden yourself with lazy incompetent group members?

O-Week

O-Week is a time to meet new people, find out all the cool events going on this year and obvs reap the free prizes, vouchers and discounts. It can make any students cold dead heart warm with joy.

Finding time for naps

Finding that little spare moment between class, assignments, work and more class is amazing, no matter how you choose to spend it. It’s great knowing that when you finish this lecture, you’ll have exactly 2.5 hours to nap before you have to study again. It can really lift a grumpy, sleep-deprived student’s spirits.

Finding a new fav show on Netflix

AKA finding a new fav way of procrastinating. The worst thing about finding a new show to watch is that you feel like you can’t study until you’ve completed the whole series. How else are you going to be able to concentrate when all you can think of is the next episode of 13 Reasons Why? Unfortunately, you’ll have to binge watch the whole season, plus watch cast interviews and behind the scene footage. And then after that is done, you may go back to studying.

Having class cancelled

Having class cancelled BEFORE you leave your house is even better. Will you do something productive with this spare time? No. Will you sleep until noon and stay in your pyjamas all day? Yes.

Just scraping pass

We all have those papers we sort of give up on the moment we write the last sentence and we don’t even bother proof reading because it’ll just make you sad. So just scraping a pass on a paper when you thought you would have to repeat the unit is the best feeling in the world.
