Five ways to power through the twenty-something existential crisis

It’s totally normal to feel stuck in a rut at some point in your 20s. If you’re starting to question every aspect of your life from your uni degree to your love life or lifestyle choices, it’s normal to be feeling a bit lost. Although posing these questions to yourself is healthy and can help you figure it all out, it doesn’t stop the twenty-something existential crisis from being overwhelming and bringing you down. If daunting life choices have you feeling a bit blue, here are some positive things you can do to cope and get through it.

Don’t be so hard on yourself

If you’re feeling stuck and unhappy with your life choices, your initial reaction might be to blame yourself. But if you continue to fault yourself, you’ll only feel worse. If you’re setting expectations for yourself that are too high or you're trying to meet other people's ridiculously high expectations, you’re bound to be disappointed. Instead, set realistic expectations and take the time to congratulate yourself when you kick any goals, no matter how small.

Start making changes if you’re unhappy

If you’re feeling blue and you’re not sure why, it’s time to pinpoint what’s making you unhappy. If you find yourself spiralling downwards after a big night of drinking, it might be time to reconsider that lifestyle choice. If you’re miserable every time you rock up to your internship, workplace or degree, it’s important to ask why. It might mean it’s not the right career path for you, or it could just mean you need to talk to someone about the parts of the job or degree that are making you unhappy. Making changes doesn’t necessarily mean quitting your job and moving to Spain - it could just be small changes you need to make to change your outlook.

Keep pursuing your passions

It’s important to note that not everyone's job and your passion will align. You could be passionate about music, sport or acting, and yet it might not be possible for you to pursue as a career. If you’re not pursuing your one true passion when choosing your career, make sure you don’t give it up. No matter how busy life gets, you’ll feel so much better if you give yourself a little time to do that one thing you love. If you’re lucky, your career might be your one true passion. If you have managed to turn your passion into a full-time gig, make sure you still make time for it outside a work setting.

Don’t get stuck in a rut

It can be easy to fall into bad habits and once you’re in that rut, it’s hard to get out. If you’re living your life on autopilot and you’re a slave to the same old routine, you’re bound to experience a bit of a slump. If you don’t make some changes, you can feel like you’ve wasted days, weeks or months of your life. Think about the things you’ve always wanted to do or simple things that would make life more exciting and go do it. Stop thinking about it and act now.

Talk about it

So many of your fellow twenty-somethings are going through this at the same time you are, so don’t feel like you have to go through it alone. Get #deep with your bestie and talk out your problems. They might just have the outsider perspective you didn’t think of that can help you push through. And who knows, you might be able to return the favour for them too.
