Five inspiring quotes you need to read if you’re graduating soon
Graduation is on the horizon – it’s so close you can almost smell the impending student debt. Sure, life after uni might include years of struggle and low paying jobs with little chance for advancement or hope, but right now it’s time to put on that gown and walk the walk!
But first, here are some inspiring quotes that will motivate you as you take on the outside world!
“Don’t ever confuse the two, your life and your work. The second is only part of the first.” - Anna Quindlen
Don’t get me wrong, your job is important. After all, it’s the whole reason you’ve been slaving away in this hell hole called uni for three plus years! But don’t become so consumed by your job that you forget to enjoy the little things in life.
Remember to watch the sunset, tell a lame joke, catch up with your friends, go to the beach and call your mother. Don’t be worried about having the bigger pay check or the largest house. Your life is worth so much more than what kind of job you have. Don’t forget to live and enjoy.
“A ship in harbour is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.” - John A. Shedd
Be adventurous and push yourself out of your comfort zone. Take risks and rejoice when they pay off. It is better to put yourself out there and fail, than do nothing and always be thinking ‘what if’. If you fail, at least you’ve tried, and learned something extraordinary in the process.
In short, don’t be the boring ship that never leaves the harbour; be the bold, creative, sexy ship that all other ships are jealous of.
“Don’t just get involved. Fight for your seat at the table. Better yet, fight for a seat at the head of the table.” - Barack Obama
Don’t just be good at what you do, be the best at what you do. The seat at the head of the table isn’t just going to be handed to you. Like everything in life, you will have to fight for it. Nothing worthwhile in your life will ever be achieved without experiencing a struggle. If success was easy, everyone would have it!
“Follow your passion, stay true to yourself, never follow someone else’s path unless you’re in the woods and you’re lost and you see a path then by all means you should follow that.” - Ellen Degeneres
Follow your own path and stay true to your own unique and creative way of thinking. That doesn’t mean you should reinvent the wheel. Determine when it’s best to take the easy route – sometimes you just need to get the heck out of the woods!
“Sometimes you find out what you are supposed to be doing by doing the things you are not supposed to do.” - Oprah Winfrey
My girl Oprah has a point, life isn’t always smooth sailing and you have to make a few mistakes to get to where you want to be. If you have just finished your degree and have realised this is not something you want to do, then you’re already on the way to achieving your full potential.
So don’t expect the perfect job that defines your life’s work to come along next week. If that happens, take the blessing and run with it. But if not, be grateful for the path and the journey that will eventually lead you to where you want to be.
