Christmas when we were kids vs Christmas now
Christmas when you were little was a magical time of year. The light in your eyes hadn’t been dampened by adulthood and you would do almost anything to get yourself on the nice list before the year was through. Christmas is still awesome when you’re an adult but you’ve probably noticed some changes that make you wish you were re-living the good old days. Here’s a few.
Christmas when you were a kid: stress-free excitement
Remember when the lead up to Christmas was an exciting stress-free time? You didn’t have a job or any money as a kid, therefore no pressure to buy everyone Christmas presents. All you had to worry about was making space in you room for the new pressies you’d be receiving.
And it might be because everything looks bigger and better from a child’s point of view, but didn’t your present pile look massive when you were little? Those were the days!
Christmas now: stress-induced mayhem
You feel like an overworked elf on Christmas Eve with all the gifts in your closet waiting to be wrapped. And who said Christmas shopping was fun? More like waiting in hour-long queues, an endless parade of slow walkers, and Christmas carols blasting from the shopping centre speakers on repeat. And nothing crushes your Christmas spirit faster than checking your bank account after a long day of gift hunting.
Christmas when you were a kid: milk and cookies for Santa
Leaving milk and cookies out for Santa was your way of erasing any naughty things you’d done throughout the year to avoid getting a bag of coal. You would be extra nice to your siblings on Christmas Eve because you knew the big guy was watching super closely that night. A cup of Milo and watching Home Alone was a good end to the night. Even though you knew you wouldn’t be able to get a wink of sleep.
Christmas now: treat yo’ self with a glass of wine
After the frenzied gift wrapping and Christmas shopping sprees you’ve endured these past couple of weeks, a nice tall glass of wine while watching Bridget Jones’s Diary is well deserved! So pass the booze, fam.
And after you realise the cold dark truth about Santa, it’s not difficult at all to drift off into a peaceful sleep. Nobody wake me until noon!
Christmas when you were a kid: all of the goods on your wish list
Your wish-list was comprised of everything and anything you could think of, no matter how outrageously expensive. Nothing is too expensive for Santa right?
Christmas now: $$$ for adult things
As you get older you start to realise not what you want, but what you need. You know what would be a great gift? For someone to pay off those student debts or to give you a million dollar check. But no, you get a pair of socks.
Christmas as a kid: the sport of Christmas tree decorating
Decorating the tree was a team effort, you had to be the one to put the star on top every year and every bauble was carefully placed. Christmas tree decorating is a sport people!
Christmas now: The more you put up, the more you'll have to take down
This year you’re letting the fam put up the decorations. You can always supervise, right? Remember, the more decorations you put up, the more you’ll have to take down.
