Apps to help you chill out during a stressful semester
There are so many ways to decrease stress, but have you ever thought about your phone as being one of them? As a long time skeptic, I thought that putting down the phone was the only way to relax and rest. But, in the age of technology, there’s an app for everything. And these stress-reducing apps have proven my theory wrong.
Smart phones and tablets offer a great platform for stress relief. And they’re available everywhere – on the bus, at uni, at home in bed – as long as you have your phone, you’ll have your apps.
This isn’t to say that digital relaxation is going to do it for everyone, but this list of apps might just unveil a new way for you to switch off and chill out.
Headspace: learn to meditate
Headspace is a comprehensive meditation app where you can access guided and unguided meditations to help you with the stresses of everyday life. The Headspace website states that the intention of their app is to “Better understand the mind, as well as our relationship with the world around us”. The best part about it? It works. The free app offers ten sessions, with heaps of hours of extra content if you want to subscribe.
It’s also great for people who suffer with anxiety, with one review on the apple store stating: “I have been struggling with this [anxiety] disorder for about 20 years and in the last few months have made huge positive steps and I attribute a great deal of the progress to this app.”
Nature Sounds: relax and sleep
Zone out to the peaceful and healing sounds of nature with this easy to use app. Listen to running water, the breaking sea, jungles, snow falling, birds and more. These melodies aren’t only beneficial to help you fall asleep when stressed, but can help you relax at any time throughout the day.
Athlete Minder: mind and body
Although the thought of exercise can be a bit stressful, we all know the feeling of elation that follows a good workout. This app helps you to apply mindfulness to your sesh by keeping track of your habits and state of mind as they apply to physical training. The app asks you a couple questions after your workout to gauge how you're feeling and what your body needs, also allowing you to review progress and habits.
This is the only app listed that you have to pay for, because let’s be real – the best things in life are free. But seeing as it’s selling for $1.99, it isn’t too bad.
Mindshift: designed for young-ens
Different forms of stress affect different types of people, with trends of worrying often linked to your age. That’s why Mindshift is so brilliant. It’s designed specifically for teens and young adults, tackling those issues that cause stress and anxiety for people of that age group.
Diaro: record your thoughts
The therapeutic benefits of keeping a diary are aplenty, with one major plus being stress reduction. So, for a diary app that works on all devices and doesn’t cost a buck, look no further than Diaro.
